I love the intersection of pop culture and politics.
I observe people’s reactions to what we are consuming on our various media channels.
I read people’s statuses and comments on social media.
And boy, oh boy, do we have some very powerful messages coming through right now.
In case you missed it, google Harrison Butker and commencement speech.
Then, all of the memes and posts you’ve been seeing will make perfect sense.
Some disclaimers before I start discussing this topic further.
I am a Steelers fan. My husband and I are from Pennsylvania and West Virginia respectively, and while we live in the Kansas City metro area, we have been and will continue to be fairly apathetic toward the NFL team closest in proximity to us. Therefore, I don’t actually care how well Butker kicks.
I am not a Swiftie, but I do appreciate Taylor’s leadership and messaging, and I encourage my girls to listen to her music and proudly let them support her and Travis. Taylor has brought an energy and spark to this area that I haven’t seen in the decade I’ve lived here, and I’m very thankful for her.
I have known that Harrison Butker has been a proud and loud supporter of pro-life. He was very vocal during the Value Them Both campaign of 2022 (even though he lives in Missouri and not Kansas). So while many people are rightfully outraged and surprised, I’ve known his views for years. He hasn’t tried to hide how he feels. He just happened to be very vocal this past weekend so more people know what this 28 year old professional kicker’s world views are.
It’s been hard to articulate why the past few years have felt so *off* to me, and what’s going on with Harrison Butker has helped me craft my true frustrations.
Harrison Butker needs to stay in his lane.
Period.
I’m so tired of people willfully and ignorantly choosing to be in lanes that they don’t belong in.
The below graphic was made by my friends over in the grassroots group, Kansans for Rights, and while all of the people shown are not staying in their lane and deserve their own special articles (which are coming!!), I am going to focus on the first person: Representative Brett Fairchild.
Farmer Brett Fairchild emails Kansas voters and tells them his views on abortion.
Seriously, check out this Tik Tok where Dr. Betsy Wickstrom, a high risk OBGYN (yes, an expert in HER lane) discussing one of his emails:
From my understanding, unlike Harrison Butker who proudly talks about his wife and children, Brett Fairchild isn’t married and doesn’t have any kids.
Guess what? It’s not my business if Farmer Brett has kids or not.
It’s his life. I quite frankly don’t care what his views are on my body.
In Kansas (the same state that Butker gave his speech this past weekend), we voted and voted loudly in August 2022 to preserve our constitutional freedoms.
No means no.
Farmer Brett and the other people you see in the above image are all up for re-election THIS year.
I’ve been told countless times during this election cycle that 2024 is the year of the woman.
Kansas proudly is leaning into the Taylor Swift energy.
Not Butker’s.
So if you also agree that politicians should stay out of our exam rooms and NFL kickers should stick to kicking balls, then consider running. There is still time to file. Email me at ginnykrumme@gmail.com if you have any questions about what KSLEG and campaigning entails.
Trust me, if Farmer Brett can be a KSLEG rep, so can you.
Bears>Butker every day all day.
Bears know their lane.
It's May 17 and we still have many uncontested Republicans in key races across the state. On the Federal level, Derek, the Election Denier and Birther has NO opponent since Eli Woody, suspended his campaign to run for state office. In our area at the state level, we have NO opponent to Republican Mike Argabright, in the 17th senate district, who was handpicked by Jeff Longbine, who is retiring. Republican Eric Smith, 76th House Rep hand picked his successor who has no opponent. The House 13th, Duane Droge, a person who couldn't be more conservative if you created him, and who also was handpicked by Joe Newland, who retired AFTER he won another uncontested race, has NO opponent. Do we live in a Monarchy where our legislators are coronated rather than elected? Where's the Kansas Democrat Party?! They chose Jeanna Repass because to strengthen the party and I am not seeing that anyone has done any prep work since the last election. Get with it!! We shouldn't be searching for candidates with just over 2 weeks to go until the filing deadline!!
